Look up a section
Type the citation as you would write it: 35 U.S.C. § 271, 42 USC 1983, 35USC271, Pub. L. No. 117-58. Subsection and range forms fall back to the section. A code citation is answered from primary law only — never from a case that happens to quote it.
What a section page shows
- The current text of the section, with its notes and source credits where the source publishes them
- The cases that cite the section, with their treatment of it
- Repealed and renumbered sections, kept so old citations still resolve
- The Public Law that enacted or amended it, where known
Frequently asked questions
Is the U.S. Code complete?
All titles are loaded from the Office of the Law Revision Counsel's publication, including sections that have since been repealed, so a citation in an older opinion still lands somewhere.
Which states are covered?
State codes and administrative codes come from law.resource.org's publications; the coverage page lists every state and the count for each.
