Everyone says there is a line. This article explains why there is not one line, why there are dozens, and why the arithmetic of the system produces waits that make no sense to anyone standing in them. It walks through what a family petition actually is, why the priority date is the only date that matters, how the per-country limits produce wildly different waits for identical relatives, and where the two paths — adjustment inside the country and consular processing outside it — diverge irreversibly. It follows two fictional families whose facts differ in one respect and whose outcomes differ by two decades. The practical thesis is that the most consequential decisions in family immigration are made before anyone files anything.
