SNYDER, J. ¶ 1. In this case we are asked to determine whether the initial reexamination required by Wis. Stat. § 980.07 (1997-98)1 for Wis. Stat. ch. 980 committed patients is mandatory or directory and to determine the appropriate remedy if the six-month time limit is violated.2 William E. Marberry contends that both the hearing and stated time limit are mandatory and appeals from a circuit court order denying his *695habeas corpus petition.
